Defense prepares the pre-military for young people; Guillermo Lasso decided to revive the program on October 18

The Government considers that it will be an alternative for young people who do not get a job or a place in the university.

The Ministry of Defence prepares the return of the preliminary military program for young people studying for high school in Ecuador; The order was given on October 18 by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces (FF. AA.) and President, Guillermo Lasso, to the new Defense Minister, Luis Hernández, during the act of possession.

In July 2012, the then President Rafael Correa, through the General Regulation to the Organic Law of Intercultural Education, arranged the repeal of Executive Decree 219, published in the Official Gazette 123 of February 25, 1969, which regulated pre-military instruction for secondary schools.

Now, President Guillermo Lasso has decided to resume it because he sees it as an “alternative” for young people if they do not find a job or a place in the university (the Assembly has not yet evacuated the reform project to the Higher Education Law, sent by the Executive to allow free admission to university).

On that occasion, Lasso said that he has discussed with Hernández the need to recover the pre-military program that will allow the armed forces. AA. nourish itself with new elements and it is also an essential social program so that young people have an alternative if they do not find a job or a place in the university.

Four days after his inauguration, Minister Hernández stated that the order had already been given by the president previously and he has to review this issue and hopefully it will be given as soon as possible. “This year is a little short, you have to see how they act with the holidays they have in the Sierra, Oriente and the Coast and, based on that, find the right time”he explained.

Yesterday, the minister indicated that the implementation would take place next year, in Trade.

Before its suspension, the pre-military was one of the programs that fifth or sixth year students (now high school) could choose, along with others such as Civil Defense, before graduating.

The students had to complete an accumulated hours of training in the military barracks, generally on Saturdays. There they received defense, first aid and other classes, with the same training rules that the military has, including punctuality, discipline and hierarchy. (I)
