The new Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS) will become a military-applied one if the hostile attitude towards Russia persists in the world. This was stated on Sputnik radio by the head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin.
According to Rogozin, in this case, only Russian cosmonauts serving the target equipment will be on the ROSS. He noted that in the event of a change in the hostile attitude towards the Russian Federation, “probably, again it will be possible to think about the international context.”
Recall that in September 2021 it was announced that the deployment of a new station, which will replace the Russian segment of the ISS, will begin in 5-6 years.
A feature of the new station will be the absence of a domestic compartment. This is due to the “new approach” to space exploration, RSC Energia said earlier. And they clarified that the constant presence of a person in orbit is highly costly. Therefore, a “new philosophy” of manned flights is needed. We are talking about a system of “visited stations” without reducing the efficiency of work carried out in Earth’s orbit.
Earlier, Rogozin said that the ISS is waiting for an uncontrolled deorbit to Europe or the United States if sanctions affect cooperation with Russia in the field of space. According to him, “there is also the option of dropping a 500-ton structure on India and China.” Rogozin noted that “the ISS does not fly over Russia,” and explained that the station’s orbit correction, as well as its avoidance of dangerous encounters with space debris, is carried out exclusively by the engines of Russian Progress MS cargo ships. Moreover, he stated that after the adoption of sanctions against Russia, a decision was made to suspend the supply of rocket engines to the United States.
