21,500 kilos of Hass avocado were exported to Europe this Monday

Small avocado producers from the areas of Cuellaje, Cotacachi and Atuntaqui, in the province of Imbabura, and in a strategic alliance with the company Interanza, exported 21,500 kilos of Hass avocado to Europe on Monday.

The shipment of the 21,500 kilos of Hass avocado was made from the Contecon port, in Guayaquil, bound for the port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, to be marketed in the markets of the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany.

The producers belong to the Federation of Fruit Growers of Northern Ecuador (Fedefrunor), which brings together 20 organizations, with approximately 1,400 members from the provinces of Imbabura and Carchi who market avocado.

The avocado is exported under the Sierra D’Or brand to position the origin of the product in international markets.

The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Pedro Álava, highlighted that the government of President Guillermo Lasso Mendoza has prioritized the production of avocado, hemp and pitahaya, to generate employment and development in the rural sector, for which the MAG will encourage the cultivation of these products.

“Small and medium producers have the capacity to become exporters. Based on a process of technology, traceability and safety, we are going to reach all consumer markets so that Ecuador opens up to the world and the world knows about Ecuador with the quality of its exportable products, because we enjoy a climate and conditions of exceptional soil and we have to promote them”, said Álava.

For his part, Marcelo Reinoso Chiriboga, president of Fedefrunor, stated that it is of the second export of Hass avocado that the producers grouped in the guild that he leads make this year to the European market.

He added that with the export of the product, the history of small producers is also exported and indicated that they seek to produce some 65,000 tons of avocado from Carchi to Loja and the valleys of the Coast, which they can represent income of between 1,200 and 1,500 million dollars for the country.

Fedefrunor hopes soon to start exporting other products such as mango, blackberry, tree tomato, granadilla, uvilla, since they consider that they can be very well received in international markets.

The Federation works with strategic allies to achieve these objectives, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the Plant and Animal Health Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad) and sectional governments, to receive technical assistance in production and support in internal and external marketing. .
