ATOR recalls that since March 9, Russia has lifted covid restrictions on flights to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Iran, which led to an increase in the number of flights to a number of countries.
Nevertheless, due to the consequences of Western sanctions, the Azerbaijani company Azerbajzan Airlines (AZAL) has so far refused to fly from Russia in March – flights have been suspended since March 5 for an indefinite period. Another Azerbaijani carrier, Buta Airways, did the same.
Egyptian EgyptAir also suspended flights from Cairo to Moscow – initially until March 10, but this ban was extended. Also, the suspension of flights to Russia was announced by the Kazakh airline Air Astana from March 10 and the Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines from March 13 to 27.
Despite the closure of the skies, many foreign companies are planning to return to Russia to resume flights to Asia and the Middle East.
