The European Union is ready to introduce a new package of sanctions against Russian businessmen, including billionaire Roman Abramovich, writes the Financial Times with reference to the draft law.
According to the publication, the permanent representatives of the EU countries have agreed on a new list of 15 persons. Sanctions may be introduced on March 14.
According to the publication, Abramovich will be included in the sanctions list because of “close ties” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and also because he “is a significant source of income” for the Russian government. In addition to him, the list will include three more Russian oligarchs, seven businessmen who are linked to the Kremlin, and four more who are linked to the disinformation campaign, the newspaper writes.
It is also noted that the EU is preparing sanctions against Russian state-owned enterprises, including in the field of aviation and shipbuilding. Options are also being considered for restrictions on Russian banks, a ban on the import of iron and steel products, as well as a ban on new investment in the energy sector and the export of luxury goods to Russia.
Recall that since the end of February, the European Union has already imposed sanctions against Russian State Duma deputies and senators, businessmen and their families, dozens of companies, the Central Bank, President Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
