For having in his possession 84 charapa turtle eggs (pododecmis expansa), five pounds of guanta meat (paca cuniculus) and six pounds of red deer meat (american apple), an Ecuadorian citizen was sentenced to three years in prison and the payment of $2,700, for crimes against wild flora and fauna.
This process began in 2020 as a result of a control operation carried out in the El Coca market in which the constituent elements were detected in a freezer of a local food store. The Prosecutor’s Office denounced this fact, based on the expertise and technical reports presented by the Technical Office of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition of Orellana, and the Environmental Protection Unit of the National Police.
“This sentence is a milestone for the reduction and elimination of wildlife trafficking in our country. It is a wake-up call for those people who affect natural ecosystems in order to obtain economic profits from an illegal activity and that is punishable by jail,” said Diego Naranjo, wildlife technician.
The charapa turtle eggs, as well as the wild meat, were disposed of by the environmental authority, through technical processes for the production of biomass.
According to the Red List of Reptiles of Ecuador, the charapa turtle is in critical danger of extinction, while the red deer and the guanta are almost threatened according to the Red List of mammals of Ecuador..
This sentence is added to the one communicated on March 3 when the environmental authorities announced that a woman was sentenced to one year in prison for illegal possession of 13 charapa turtles in Guayaquil. (I)
