The National Assembly, in the early hours of this March 10, with 99 votes in favor, granted amnesty to 268 people with the support of legislators from the Unión por la Esperanza (UNES), Pachakutik, part of the Government bloc Bancada Nacional Agreement and of the Democratic Left.
The legislative session lasted until 04:00 this Thursday, and after reading the extensive report prepared by the Constitutional Guarantees Commission, the debate was opened regarding the content of the report and finally it was put to the vote.
Of the list of people who obtain amnesty, 60 belong to the case of prosecuted for exercising the right to resistance and social protest of October 2019, 153 people appear as defenders of community territories, 12 cases related to the administration of indigenous justice and 43 as defenders of nature.
After the approval of the report, the president of the National Assembly said that the Legislative Branch made this decision with the reconciliation and unity of Ecuador in mind.
“These results are going to reconcile the country, we have worked for the unity that our Ecuador expected so much, I feel very happy that our colleagues, the popular fighters, defenders of human rights, water and nature and all their families today recover their freedom, justice in the country, and the long-awaited reconciliation and national unity,” said Llori.
