Pucayacu suffers the ravages of winter again. A few weeks after the first overflow, the heavy rains of the last few hours increased the flow of the Quindigua River and caused another flood, affecting this population.
The river entered the center of the town and the water entered several homes last night. The Parish Board alerted the residents of the overflow.
As a result of the rains, the passage to that parish of Cotopaxi was affected. The left bank of the entrance bridge collapsed.
In Pucayacu, in La Maná, the affected areas are cleaned and the Quindigua River is dredged; other towns in Cotopaxi remain incommunicado
The home of the Ibáñez Castillo family was one of the most affected in the town. The water entered rooms and the kitchen. The water level almost covered the kitchen counters.
“The houses are flooded, the belongings destroyed…” said a resident, who added that the rising river began to flood the houses at 8:00 p.m.
Raúl Molina, from the Eighth Commandment page, recorded the affectations. He indicated that the level of the flood was greater compared to the problem that occurred in February. Molina told this newspaper that there were evacuations due to the risks posed by the level of the flow.
On Eliseo Ibáñez Avenue, the main avenue in Pucayacu, there were stones, tree remains and other debris that the current carried.
The mayor of La Maná, Polo Carrera, confirmed that the left bank of the entrance bridge to the parish collapsed, thus preventing direct communication with the citizens of this sector.
Destruction left by the overflow of rivers in Cotopaxi will lead to the relocation of dozens of families
Machinery of that Municipality and the Parish Board tried to repair the damage.
“We are attentive to the overflow of the Quindigua River, helping and coordinating directly with more authorities to evacuate people so that they are out of danger,” Carrera said.
On Tuesday morning, some houses were still with mud and water inside.
Eighth Commandment showed a video in which a part of the collapsed Pucayacu bridge is seen. The strong current of the river took a part of that road, generating a hole that prevents vehicular traffic.
People from that population tried to circulate on a small margin that remained of the road, although authorities warned of the risks.

Cristian Moreira, councilor of the La Maná canton, stated that, despite the dredging that the GAD and the Cotopaxi prefecture have been carrying out for three weeks on the Quindigua river, it overflowed again, but at the same time he stressed that these works prevented other populations were affected by the force of nature.
The mayor indicated that the Malqui community, inhabited by about 60 people, was affected for the first time and that the Pucayacu parish, with its 160 families, suffered the flooding of their homes and the loss of their belongings. Therefore, they returned to the established shelters again.
“15 days ago, those affected in Pucayacu left the shelters, now some families must return to them, we are doing what winter allows us, since it does not give us a break and we cannot advance according to the planning that we have established to give solution to this problem”, said the councilman and deputy mayor of this canton.
On February 25, personnel from the Public Works Department of the GAD of La Maná, together with technicians from the Development Bank of Ecuador, toured the area where the gabion wall project will be carried out in the Pucayacu parish. This project was set to be carried out through a tender at the end of this month, once it was declared an emergency.
Moreira also pointed out that dredging is the definitive solution to prevent the Quindigua River from overflowing, but in the event that for any reason it is not done, the inhabitants of Pucayacu must be removed from their homes, since at the moment it is considered a risk zone. (I)
