Council of Quito approved resolution that declares responsible breastfeeding as a public policy

On the morning of this Tuesday, March 8, 2022, the Council approved -with 14 votes in favor and four abstentions- the draft resolution declaring public policy in the Metropolitan District of Quito to the responsible breastfeeding.

The document has a series of appeals to the mayor in order to promote safe places for mothers to feed their children newborns, as well as communication campaigns about the importance of breastfeeding.

the councilwoman Analia Ledesma (ID) who presented this draft resolution pointed out that this proposal does not intend restrict breastfeeding of mothers to closed spaces, but to provide safe points for them. In the session she indicated the case of a mother who improvised a space to feed her baby in a municipal transport station, near a garbage dump.

“It is necessary to create spaces that provide security for the mother at the time of breastfeeding, a child breastfed in correct conditions will be an adult with better intellectual and physical conditions in the future”, he added.

The document asks the mayor Santiago Guarderas ordering the Secretaries of Health and Social Inclusion to take the necessary measures to “Implement the installation of lactation tanks, in municipal offices, transfer stations and land terminals of municipal public transport and other spaces of institutional administration”.

In addition, it requests that the Ministry of Communication, in conjunction with Health and Social Inclusion, generate socialization campaigns on the importance of breastfeeding.

For her part, Councilor Paulina Izurieta (ID-Vive) pointed out that this should be part of a largest ordinance in favor of women. “There is no mention of the attention that should be given to the malnourished women, drug users who breastfeed, what are we going to do with those women?” she asserted.

In addition, he questioned the budget that will be needed for the implementation of the cabins was not included breast-feeding, therefore abstained in the vote.
