As we enter the season of Lent, that is, the 40 days prior to experiencing the passion and subsequent resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Church asks Catholics to observe this season of penance with the three great pillars that are fasting, alms and prayer.
Fasting, together with prayer and almsgiving, has been a Lenten practice since ancient times as a sign of the interior conversion to which Christ calls his faithful.
Lent is the time of preparation for the Lord’s Passover through prayer, fasting and dedication to others; is the conversion time.
fast and abstinence
Fasting consists of eating only one meal a day. Fasting is obligatory for Catholics from 18 to 59 years of age.
Abstinence consists of not eating meat. It is compulsory from the age of 14.
The Catholic Church advises its faithful to respect the days of abstinence and fasting: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Prayer
In prayer during this Lenten season, the Christian dialogues with the Lord, allows grace to enter his heart and opens himself to the action of the Holy Spirit. This practice can be developed by devoting a moment of the day to prayer.
alms and charity
The Lenten practice of helping others can be reflected with the economic contribution of alms, but also with help to the less favored. (I)
