“Dashing 20s, or Welcome to the USSR”: stores began to limit food sales to “one hand”

Large retail chains have obtained permission from the authorities to limit the sale of a number of goods with a minimum margin to one person “to fight dealers.” This was reported on the website of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

“The largest federal and regional retail chains have decided to minimize the risks of resellers acquiring socially important food products, for which, under agreements with the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture and the Federal Antimonopoly Service, a minimum mark-up has been established,” the agency said in a statement.

It is also reported there: “In a number of regions, cases have already been recorded when such goods were purchased at a time in an obviously larger volume than necessary for private consumption (up to several tons) for subsequent resale.”

In reality, resellers would hardly buy food in bulk. This is an illiquid product. That is, it cannot be quickly sold at an inflated price or easily resold for a profit in the future. First, food spoils. Secondly, the last thing that will disappear from stores is just “socially important food”. And many of them have fixed prices. By buying such products, you are more likely to lose than gain at least a couple of thousand rubles.

The problem (but this is a version) is rather that ordinary buyers began to stock up on food en masse. So it was at the very beginning of the covid epic in March 2020.

And trade can not cope with such demand. Moreover, unlike 2020, it is unlikely to be of a short-term nature. This is for a long time. People will be eager to buy today because prices will rise tomorrow. And so, even before any events that cannot be called at the request of the authorities of the Russian Federation other than a “special operation” (news about which can be read here and here), they grew at an outrageous pace. And now (for some goods) they increase literally by leaps and bounds.

The introduction of “Soviet” measures in trade could not but resonate in the hearts and minds of Russians. This is how they react to the return of realities that seem to have remained forever in the 80s of the last century.
