MANTA, Manabi
A so-called “low-profile” boat this afternoon had trouble staying afloat off the coast of Jaramijó, Manabí province.
Divers had to intervene to prevent the total sinking of the vessel, which was detected the previous week in international waters between Ecuador and Colombia.
The boat was detained last Friday by members of the National Navy and National Police, who detained four people: three Ecuadorians and one Colombian, who were moving inside the ship.
“The Guayas School Ship, fulfilling its international training cruise, was able to interdict this vessel for its subsequent capture. These low-profile craft-type boats are regularly used by transnational narco-criminal organizations for the transport of substances subject to control, due to their cargo capacity and mimicry on the high seas, ”the Ecuadorian Navy said in a statement. However, no illicit substances were found in the operation.
The ship arrived this Tuesday at the Manabi coast. It is expected to refloat to later hand it over to the State Attorney General’s Office. (I)
