What remained of the historic and tourist icon of La Caleta, in the canton of La Libertad, finally collapsed as a result of the pounding of the sea. This was a natural stone arch that had formed in this area.
The news of the collapse of the rock formation was reported on the night of Friday, March 4. This Saturday, at the site, there is only rock scattered on the sand; while the little that remains of the structure also threatens to give way completely as it shows cracks.
“I was there until 7:00 p.m. and everything was fine, although a few days ago we saw that part of the rock had cracked,” said Roberto Malavé, who has been fishing in La Caleta for 40 years.
Positive holiday for the tourism sector, which gives greater merit to the elimination of restrictions than to the reduction of VAT
He relates that among the memories he has is that the original structure was a kind of arch and you could walk on it calmly. “It was like a little bridge. I remember that there was a time when you could already feel how it was moving, then a part fell off and the big rock remained, which has now also given way,” said the artisan of the sea.
The novelty has generated various reactions among the inhabitants, especially for those who have memories from their childhood. In that place, for example, the children could come to play with their relatives and, in addition, it was the favorable sector to see the sunset while waiting for the fishermen to reach the shore.
After the first part fell, shorebirds such as pelicans, seagulls and frigatebirds took advantage of the fact that there was no human presence to use the 4.3-meter-high rock as a resting and even nesting point. But since last Friday, these animals migrated from the place.
The Municipality of La Libertad has planned the removal of the debris at the request, especially, of the fishermen of the sector. In addition, a plan to rebuild the arch was announced as part of the expansion of the city’s boardwalk.

In this way, future generations can continue enjoying the tourist icon, as confirmed by Mayor Víctor Valdivieso.
The authority indicated that the project and studies for the expansion of the boardwalk are already in place. Currently, the adjudication process is carried out and in a first phase the rockfill is contemplated to give protection to the coastal profile, since the sea has collaborated in the erosion of the land over the years.
