This Saturday, March 5, after 10:00 a.m., a large-scale landslide hampered the road section between Chaguarpamba and Río Pindo, the border with the province of El Oro, in the Chipianga sector.
The heavy rainfall recorded in the inter-Andean region has caused the accumulation of water on the slopes and mountains surrounding the roads, which has caused the removal and landslide of land, brush, trees and stone material on the roadway of main and secondary streets.
Personnel from the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) are working on the removal of debris and the cleaning of this and other roads that have been left underground due to the landslides recorded during this last week.
Last Friday, for example, landslides were reported on the Loja – Catamayo road, although it was a temporary closure. The road was reopened around 11:00 p.m.
There were also landslides on the Loja – Cuenca road, in the El Durazno sector and in the Santiago parish, but the cleaning work had not yet finished in this section. At noon this Saturday this route was already partially enabled.
Another avenue that was severely affected is the one that leads to the El Cisne sanctuary, in the sector called ‘Agua delmiracle’, which was partially opened today.
The road to the Vilcabamba and Malacatos valleys, from the El Tambo sector, was also closed due to landslides in the La Era sector, southeast of Loja.
Santiago Guarderas confirms that there are 22 deaths from the flood that affected the La Gasca sector, in the northwest of Quito
The authorities recommend using these roads only if it is necessary to move. And if required, they suggest avoiding moving at night, since heavy rain, fog and darkness increase the risk of accidents.
In Cariamanga, the cantonal capital of Calvas, the inhabitants also reported this Friday the fall of heavy rains, which caused the flooding of streets and some homes.
While in Malacatos, the owners and administrators of lots, houses and farms showed through videos and photos on social networks the flooding that affected them due to the accumulation of rainwater. (I)
