The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that the EU sanctions were not directed against the Russian people, but were designed to maintain compliance with international norms. It is reported by CNN.

He also stressed that the EU sanctions imposed because of the special operation in Ukraine will not lead to an immediate end to the conflict. The European Union, he said, can do a lot, do not expect anti-Russian measures to fix everything.

In addition, Borrell stressed that restrictive measures against the Russian Federation are “not East against West” and “not a remake of the Cold War.” “We are not enemies of the Russian people, we are friends of Ukraine, we support them in the struggle, but at the same time we do not oppose the Russian people,” he said.

Borrell also noted that the European Union will not convince Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to leave Kyiv or stop fighting.

Earlier, Zelensky accused NATO of weakness. The alliance, in his opinion, “created a narrative” that closing the skies over Ukraine would lead to a clash with Russia, due to “internal uncertainty.” According to the Ukrainian leader, the March 4 NATO summit was “weak” and “disunited”.

It shows, he clarified, that not all members of the alliance consider the struggle for the freedom of Europe a paramount task. Zelensky expressed the opinion that Russia’s potential “aggression” against NATO is a “self-hypnosis” of those who own powerful weapons, but are “internally” unsure of themselves.
