Putin signs law criminalizing calls for new sanctions against Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that, among other things, provides for criminal liability for calls for the introduction of new anti-Russian sanctions.

According to the new law, the Russian Criminal Code is supplemented with an article on “calls for the introduction of restrictive measures against the Russian Federation, citizens of the Russian Federation or Russian legal entities.”

This article will apply to citizens of the Russian Federation who have previously been brought to administrative responsibility for similar offenses during the year.

Punishment is provided in the form of a fine of up to 500 thousand rubles or in the amount of wages or other income of the convicted person for a period of up to three years, or restriction of freedom, forced labor for up to three years, arrest for up to six months, or imprisonment for up to three years with a possible fine of up to 200 thousand rubles or in the amount of the convicted person’s salary for a period of up to one year.
