The New York Metropolitan Opera has canceled performances by Russian singer Anna Netrebko scheduled for spring 2022. It is reported by TASS.

“Soprano Anna Netrebko has been excluded from her scheduled performances at the Met in Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot in April and May, and in Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlos next season,” theater director general Peter Gelb, acknowledging that this decision is a “great loss” both for the theater itself and for the art of opera in general.

As the director of the theater explained, Netrebko did not obey the demand “to renounce public support for Russian President Vladimir Putin” in the light of the Russian Federation’s special military operation in Ukraine.

Earlier it became known that the Bavarian State Opera broke off cooperation with Netrebko, and the singer herself decided to take a break from her stage activities. In addition, she will not perform at the anniversary of Barcelona’s Grand Theater Liceu.
