The UK and 37 other states have called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate possible war crimes in Ukraine.
As stated in a statement from the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Justice of Britain, the appeals of member countries “allow the prosecutor to proceed immediately with the investigation without waiting for judicial authorization.”
Earlier, ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan announced his intention to send a request to the Pre-Trial Chamber to open a full-fledged investigation into the situation in Ukraine.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
