Turkey cannot return S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to Russia against the backdrop of hostilities in Ukraine, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said.

According to RBC with reference to Hurriyet, the minister called those who call for the return of the S-400 “mentally retarded” and stressed that this idea is “complete idiocy” at a time when Ukraine “cannot do anything against aircraft and missiles.”

Turkey buys Russian weapons despite being a member of NATO. The United States has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with this deal and in December 2020 imposed appropriate sanctions.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”

In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
