Aleksey Arestovich, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, told why the country is not afraid of the use of nuclear weapons by the Russian Federation, Ukrainian TV channel 24 reports, citing Arestovich’s post on Facebook.
According to him, the use of nuclear weapons is “illogical” for several reasons. “Firstly, the destruction of the entire Ukrainian army by nuclear forces will lead to the fact that the European part of Russia and Belarus will become uninhabitable for a long period,” Arestovich emphasized.
Secondly, according to him, the activation of nuclear weapons requires a complex procedure. To approve this decision, “coordinated actions of at least seven people are needed – from Putin himself through the commander of a military unit – to direct weapons operators,” Zelensky’s adviser explained, noting that even if such a command is given, “in this chain there might be a failure somewhere.”
He added that “over the past 30 years, this is far from the first bringing the nuclear forces of the parties to a state of high alert.” According to him, “it’s hard to even calculate – practically it happens before every more or less serious negotiations.”
“Third, and most importantly, Putin needs Ukraine. After the use of nuclear weapons, he will actually not be able to control our people (although this is impossible in any case),” Arestovich summed up, adding that “this whole story about nuclear weapons is an attempt at psychological pressure.” “Not. We are not afraid,” he concluded.
Recall that the day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the transfer of the Russian deterrence forces to a special mode of service, explaining this decision by the fact that “top officials of the leading NATO countries also allow aggressive statements against our country.” These forces are based on the strategic nuclear forces, which include the Strategic Rocket Forces.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
