Aeroflot is suspending all flights to Europe from February 28 until further notice, the carrier said in a statement.

The decision was made due to airspace restrictions imposed by the European authorities.

Recall, on Sunday, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Union is closing the airspace for all Russian aircraft, including private ones, as a response to the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Prior to this, a number of European countries managed to close the sky for Russian airlines, which led to a sharp increase in flight time.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”

In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
