Due to sanctions against Russian airlines adopted by the EU, as well as similar measures that may follow from the US, Russia risks losing half of its civil aircraft fleet within a month. This is reported by the experts of “Kommersant”.

We remind you that the EU authorities have decided to completely ban the supply and leasing of aircraft, helicopters and other aircraft in the Russian Federation, as well as their insurance and maintenance. This ban applies to both new and previously concluded contracts with a transitional period valid until March 28.

According to the latest data from the Cirium agency, 55% of the entire Russian aviation fleet is leased from international companies. As Fedor Borisov, an expert at the Institute of Transport Economics and Transport Policy at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, emphasizes, the greatest threat to Russia represents an item related to the maintenance and supply of spare parts and components for aircraft manufacturing.

For European lessors and manufacturers that are losing the Russian sales market, the EU decision will also be a serious blow, but, as Fyodor Borisov emphasizes, economic calculations in the modern world prevail over political ones. At the same time, he does not rule out a scenario in which the Russian authorities will try to keep the aircraft fleet inside the country, and is also not sure whether the ban on the supply of parts to suppliers of secondary spare parts will affect.
