The Turkish authorities have banned Russian warships from passing through the Black Sea straits. This was stated on Facebook by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
At the same time, the Cumhuriyet newspaper reports that Ankara did not impose restrictions on the passage of Russian warships through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.
The Russian Embassy in Turkey also “did not receive any official notifications” from Turkey regarding the closure of the straits, TASS reports.
This week, Ukrainian Ambassador to Ankara Vasily Bondar asked the Turkish government to close the Bosporus and the Dardanelles to Russian ships. He pointed out that “the presence of Russian warships off the coast of Ukraine is a danger to the country.”
Earlier, Russia concentrated a significant naval grouping in the Black Sea, transferring six large landing ships from other fleets.
According to the Montreux Convention, in the event of a military conflict, Turkey can close the straits for warships of “hostile countries.”
