Carnival Holiday: The state of the roads to Cuenca

The Carnival holiday is one of the most anticipated dates for the Ecuadorian tourism industry, mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people to various destinations.

One of the most visited cities on these holidays is Cuenca, which seeks to provide visitors with natural, gastronomic and craft experiences.

At the national level, the Government expects it to be one of the holidays that registers the best results since the pandemic, as there are fewer restrictions, due to the reduction in COVID-19 infections and the advancement of vaccination.

The Ministry of Tourism estimates that 1.2 million people mobilize during the carnival holiday; entities announced control operations

According to him daily report of ECU 911 Austro, dated February 25, 2022, this is the state of the roads in the provinces of Azuay and Cañar:

  • Cuenca-Gualaceo-Limon: Drive carefully due to possible landslides on the Ingamullo II sector road at km 6, 39, 47, 54 and 57.
  • Cuenca-Molleturo-Naranjal: Route enabled from 05:00 to 17:00 at kilometer 49. For the rest of the day, drive with caution when crossing kilometer 49 due to the instability of a slope.
  • Basin-Lumagpamba-Gualaceo.
  • Cuenca-Girón-Pasaje: Drive with caution at kilometers 31.2, 53, 72, 75, 84.5 and 115. It is recommended to drive at a moderate speed while driving through the Santa Isabel canton due to the presence of unevenness in the road and the geological faults that cross this corridor .
  • Cuenca-Azogues highway.
  • Basin-Zhud-Cochancay: Drive carefully in the San Camilo sector, for 860 meters.
  • Cuenca-Cañar-Alausi: Enabled, drive carefully due to work on the road.
  • Cumbe-La Jarata-Oña.
  • Cuenca-Sigsig-Matanga.

  • Paute – Guarumales – Mendez: It’s found enabled up to kilometer 99sector of the Jurupis stream, where a bridge is being built and it is expected to be ready next March.

Among the alternative routes is Gualaceo-Plan de Milagro, where it is requested to drive with caution, because around 10 percent of the road does not have pavement, and Sígsig-Chiguinda-Gualaquiza, which does not present any news.

According to the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, The vehicular passage of kilometer 49 of the Cuenca-Molleturo-El Empalme road will be closed for 40 days from March 2. The alternate route of this tour after that day is the Cuenca-Zhud-Cochancay-El Triunfo route. (I)
