French President Emmanuel Macron said that in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he conveyed to him a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for negotiations.

According to him, he had a “sincere, direct and quick conversation with President Putin at the request of President Zelensky” in order to “first of all ask him to stop the fighting as soon as possible, but especially to offer him negotiations, ask him to negotiate with President Zelensky.”

As Macron clarified at a press conference in Brussels on Friday night after an extraordinary EU summit, Zelensky asked to call Putin, since he himself could not get through to him.

Macron also spoke about the need to maintain channels for contacts with the Russian Federation in order to achieve a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, but stressed that at the moment Russia has deliberately chosen a different path.

Early Thursday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia,” adding that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
