The European Union, in response to the start of the military operation of the Russian Federation in the Donbass, intends to impose sanctions against the strategic sectors of the Russian economy.
According to the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, access to key technologies and markets will be blocked, TASS reports.
For its part, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell made it clear that the EU is about to impose the toughest package of sanctions against Russia in the history of the community.
Earlier today, US President Joseph Biden phoned his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and assured that “the United States, together with allies and partners, will impose tough sanctions against the Russian Federation.”
At the same time, the Ukrainian leader called on the world to create an anti-Putin coalition and provide financial and defense assistance to his country.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
According to the Russian leader, the plans of the Russian Federation “do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories,” however, “the Russian Federation considers it important that all the peoples of Ukraine can exercise the right of self-determination.”
Reacting to the Kremlin’s decision, US President Joe Biden, in a special statement, called Russia’s attack on Ukraine unprovoked and unjustified and promised to hold it to account.
For his part, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged Putin to “stop the soldiers” from attacking Ukraine and give peace a chance.
