Russian billionaires lost a total of $8.339 billion during the day on February 21 amid the collapse of Russian indices and quotes of Russian companies related to the situation in Donbass, Forbes.ru writes based on Forbes Real Time data.

According to the publication, the “leaders in terms of losses” were the largest shareholder of Lukoil, Vagit Alekperov (his fortune decreased by $946 million) and the co-owners of Novatek, Leonid Mikhelson ($927 million) and Gennady Timchenko ($906 million). This happened due to the fact that Lukoil’s quotes fell from 6,610 rubles to 6,028 rubles (at a minimum at 14:45 Moscow time), and the shares of Novatek fell from 1,526 rubles to 1,358 rubles (at 15:45 Moscow time) apiece.

The fall in the quotes of these companies is due to the fact that foreign investors, against the background of the escalation of the situation with Ukraine, are selling shares of Russian enterprises that are in their portfolios.

As Kirill Chuiko, an analyst at BCS Global Markets, told the publication, “geopolitical risks reign in the stock markets, resulting in great uncertainty and great volatility. Also affected by media reports about possible sanctions.
