Environmental pollution has killed almost 9 million people on the planet. This is twice as many as the number of deaths from coronavirus, said UN rapporteur David Boyd, Cursorinfo reports.
So, according to him, 750 thousand people die every year from exposure to exhaust gases and other toxic substances. Moreover, air pollution-related deaths mostly occur in middle- and low-income countries.
Pollution and toxic substances are the main factors in the catastrophic reduction of biodiversity on Earth, causing environmental crises, the report emphasizes.
Earlier, Rosprirodnadzor named the regions of the Russian Federation with the dirtiest air. The Krasnoyarsk Territory became the anti-leader. Thus, the total amount of emissions into the atmosphere in the region is 1.8 million tons per year (11% of emissions in Russia), or 30 thousand railcars. The city of Cherepovets in the Vologda Oblast takes the second place in terms of emissions. The volume of emissions there reaches 280 thousand tons (1.7% of all emissions in the Russian Federation). Closes the top three Novokuznetsk in the Kemerovo region – 278 thousand tons (1.6%). In terms of the amount of damage for 2020–2022, the most polluted territories in Russia, according to the agency, are the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Krasnodar and Primorsky Territories. This is followed by the Astrakhan and Yaroslavl regions, the Trans-Baikal Territory, the Irkutsk Region and the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Rosprirodnadzor specified.
