Ecuadorian project that seeks to protect the howler monkey needs citizen support to win international funding

Protecting Ecuadorian rainforest canopy dwellers (Protecting the Inhabitants of the Ecuadorian Rainforest Canopy) is called the research project of the Great Leaf Foundation which is one of the 6 finalists, in the Forests category, of the fund European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) which annually funds conservation initiatives.

The foundation’s project seeks to carry out research on the biodiversity found in the treetops, including the howler monkey, a primate that is seriously threatened in Ecuador, which still lives in forests such as La Esperanza, in Manabí.

In addition, this study will allow to determine the key plant species to restore the areas surrounding the forest to generate a biological corridor.

Currently the contest is in the voting process where the greatest support obtained with votes will allow the project to win financing for 30,000 euros.

“We are now second behind a Mexican initiative. We need the support of Ecuadorians to win”, Says Andrea Narvaez, project director of the foundation.

In La Esperanza a small scientific station has been established where scientists, students and interns come to do animal and plant studies. A plot has been established in the forest to study the plant species that exist and their growth. Within these studies, new species of plants have been found for science. (I)
