UNES legislators ratify the negative report of the repetition bill presented by the Attorney General’s Office

The Justice Commission, this February 21, ratified the negative report of the Repetition bill. It did not reach the six votes in favor of the reconsideration proposed by the legislator Ricardo Vanegas of the Pachakutik bloc.

Assemblyman Ricardo Vanegas (Pk), when raising the motion to reconsider the vote, explained that in the previous session on February 17 he abstained from voting because he was not very satisfied with the procedure that had apparently been established, but also because he considers that a Repetition law should have much more drastic penalties.

He revealed that he spoke with the state attorney general, Íñigo Salvador, whom he asked that when the bill returns to the commission for the second debate report, he has to appear and modify the text and include more drastic sanctions; “Ecuador cannot forgive corruption or the corrupt.”

This time, legislator Alejandro Jaramillo (ID) and president of the Justice Commission, abstained from voting to reconsider the vote on the report.

Jaramillo called on his colleague, Ricardo Vanegas, to act more seriously in the legislative task, and assured that he will not play the game in favor of any side. “You cannot say that from one moment to the next I spoke with the State Attorney and changed my mind, each one has to answer for their actions, because the Democratic Left caucus voted in favor of this bill,” he stressed.

For the reconsideration, the following voted in favor: Dina Farinango, José Chimbo and Ricardo Vanegas (Pachakutik); Dalton Bacigalupo and Johanna Moreira (ID).

The following spoke out against: Fausto Jarrín, Yhajaira Urresta and José Agualsaca and Blanca López (UNES). Alejandro Jaramillo (ID) abstained.

When explaining the vote against, the legislator Fausto Jarrín (UNES), pointed out that his previous position is ratified, because “those of us who understand laws and know the law, we are not concerned and will never be concerned about what the leaflets come out to say about our legislative work, because a law cannot be approved because the Attorney General wants it that way. A law first has to be constitutional and this tome is a shame for those of us who understand the law”, he stressed.

Despite the results obtained in the reconsideration, the project with a negative report will be brought to the attention of the Presidency of the Parliament so that it can be put to the consideration of the plenary session. (I)
