The US diplomatic mission in Moscow will face security difficulties if the expulsions of US diplomats continue, US Ambassador to Moscow John Sullivan said in an interview with Politico.

The diplomat stressed that over the past five years, the number of employees of the US Embassy has decreased from about 1.2 thousand people to 150. Many functions of the embassy, including visa processing, have been suspended, and some facilities outside of Moscow have been closed.

Sullivan said there could be problems if the embassy fails to secure Russian visas for workers who must maintain and replace the building’s aging infrastructure. According to him, the diplomatic mission has already had problems with elevators, generators, electrical transformers, fuel tanks and water pumps.

Earlier it was reported that US Deputy Ambassador to Moscow Bart Gorman was expelled from Russia. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the decision was made in as a mirror measure in response to the expulsion of the Minister-Counselor of the Russian Embassy in Washington.
