The National Union of Educators (UNE) issued a press release this Saturday, February 19, reporting that members of the National Police entered “without explanation”, around 12:00, to his building called “Casa del Maestro” located on Javier de Ascázubi and 9 de octubre streets, in the north center of Quito.
According to the statement, a meeting was taking place in the facilities between teachers’ leaders from various provinces, who analyzed the reports issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance on equal pay for teachers.
The former vice president and member of the UNE, George Scale noted that they were also government representatives at the meeting. However, he emphasized that cops they were inside and outside the building “without authorization from the competent authority”.
He requested that the Minister of Government, Alexandra Vela respond about the reasons for the operation carried out, “we are facing a government that intends to intimidate their leaders against the actions that are being prepared to demand that the Organic Law of Intercultural Education (LOEI) be applied and the salary equalization of the Teachers”, added Escala.
The UNE representative did not rule out the possibility of file a formal complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, although he asserted that the institution should act ex officio.
“All these actions by the government are in vain, because we will not stop carrying out important days of struggle and mobilization so that our requests are respected,” he said.
In the text sent by the UNE, its president Isabel Vargas denounced that the policemen, when questioned, responded that “They were sent to provide protection.”
Letter sent to Carondelet
On February 17, the UNE shared on its social networks a letter sent to President Guillermo Lasso. The text maintains that a report signed by the Minister of Finance Simon Cave, on the proposal of salary increase for teachers of the National Education System would be disobeying a sentence of the Constitutional Court.
This, after the highest body in judicial matters declared the constitutionality of the Reformatory Law to the LOEI.
“The resolution, in its substance, places education as a fundamental right (…) The Finance report determines that the impact budget to comply with the staggered categories, it is of $2,175 million. that figure does not correspond to reality”points to the text.
The report goes on to add that what demand would be approximately $560 million and that the Public Expenditure Observatory concludes that the impact would be close to $340 million.
Finally, it maintains that said report would present manipulated ciphers to “evade responsibility” and puts in the hands of the president to prevent teachers from going out to mobilizations. (I)
