The U.S. Trade Representative Office (USTR) has listed messaging platform WeChat and online marketplace AliExpress as a piracy market for fakes. WeChat, owned by Tencent Holdings Ltd., and AliExpress, owned by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., are “two of China’s major online marketplaces that promote counterfeit products,” according to Bloomberg.
According to 3Dnews, USTR first published a list of pirate markets in 2011 to inform the public and help stakeholders protect intellectual property rights.
At the end of 2021, 42 online platforms and 35 physical markets were included in the corresponding list, which, according to representatives of the department, are directly involved in or facilitate the counterfeiting of products of various trademarks, as well as infringe copyrights.
