The shelling of Ukraine, which has been taking place over the past 48 hours, is part of a Russian scenario aimed at creating false provocations to launch Russian aggression against Ukraine. This opinion, according to Interfax, was expressed at the Munich Conference by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
According to him, the United States is concerned that Russia has not chosen the path of a diplomatic solution to the conflict. He added that it is very important to “shed light on what is happening.”
“Perhaps this will move Russia to a different path,” Blinken said. “We remain fully prepared with our colleagues to engage in diplomacy.”
So, earlier today, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny said that a Red Cross humanitarian convoy came under fire in the Donbass. According to him, the shelling was carried out from a large-caliber machine gun, an 82 mm mortar, an AGS-17 grenade launcher from the village of Veselaya Gora.
The day before, Blinken, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council, stated that Russian troops were preparing to launch an invasion of Ukraine in the “coming days”. According to the secretary of state, Russia may “create a pretext” before the offensive: it could allegedly be a “violent event” in Ukraine or “some kind of accusation against the Ukrainian government.”
Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that a “Russian invasion” was possible within the next few days.
UNN, citing CNN information, wrote that the Biden administration believes that Russia could try to use the meeting of the UN Security Council on February 17 as such a “pretext” for an offensive. According to the interlocutor of CNN, the Russian mission to the UN allegedly distributed among the members of the Security Council a document alleging the commission of war crimes during the armed conflict in the South-East of Ukraine.
Some time after this message, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin said that the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN distributed among the members of the Security Council materials of the Investigative Committee and RT, in which the Ukrainian military is accused of committing crimes using prohibited methods of war.
“I ask you to look at these materials and ask you to be prepared that you will see a terrible thing,” he added.
The Kremlin, however, assures that statements by Western authorities, including US President Joe Biden, about Russia’s alleged intention to attack Ukraine only increase the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis.
