US authorities have intelligence that the withdrawal of Russian troops from exercises on the border with Ukraine is a “ploy” designed to “mislead” the US and other states, The Washington Post writes, citing four unnamed officials.
According to one official, there is “reliable information” about Russia’s “disinformation campaign”, part of which is the withdrawal of troops.
Washington received “credible information that Russia’s statements [об отводе войск] may be part of a disinformation campaign designed to mislead the US,” one said.
In addition, two interlocutors of the newspaper announced additional intelligence that allegedly speaks of Russia’s alleged “intention” to stage a “chemical attack”, blaming the Americans for this.
Sources told the publication that Russia allegedly continues to build up military forces near the border with Ukraine against the backdrop of intensifying shelling in the east of the country. In addition, Washington believes that the ongoing Russian-Belarusian exercises “Allied Resolve” on the territory of the republic can become a cover for an attack on Ukraine.
