Police recorded a drop in murders in Zone 8 over the weekend, as deaths in the Penitentiary are still being investigated as suicide

During the first week of the state of exception, from October 19 to 25, 11,147 operations were carried out with the registration of 86,154 citizens and 70,665 vehicles in different areas of the Guayas province.

In zone 8, which corresponds to Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón, the forces of order carried out 9,459 operations with the requisition of 40,129 cars and 43,256 people. In the other 22 cantons there were 1,688 interventions with the revision of 15,683 vehicles and 25,924 citizens.

Only in Zone 8 were 132 of the 220 detained for various crimes throughout the province. The rest were captured in the other 22 cantons.

Among the recent interventions, the Police detained two citizens who had 52 explosives, three drones, two pistols, 1,203 cartridges of different caliber and other evidence in a house in a private urbanization on the road to Daule. Those items, according to the police authorities, were intended to enter the Guayaquil prison complex.

The colonel Fredy Sarzosa, commander in charge of zone 8, said that the last weekend there was a drop in violent deaths, compared to the previous weekend when 12 murders were counted. This weekend there were three cases.

Sarzosa ruled out that this decrease in the figures is the product of the operations, however, this weekend, in addition to the deaths of sprinter Alex Quiñónez and singer Cristopher Arcalla, an assassination attempt was reported at the latter’s wake. Two people were injured in that episode and a foreigner was arrested.

The seven deaths registered in the Litoral Penitentiary on Saturday do not add to the figures that the Police now handle with 528 violent deaths so far in 2021.
