Survivors of COVID-19 are at increased risk for depression, sleep problems, and drug abuse. This is reported by The Daily Mail, citing an article in the British Medical Journal.
The publication clarifies that there are more and more studies linking the victory over the coronavirus and its consequences every day. And another one – 150 thousand people took part in it – showed a connection between the transferred COVID-19 and mental health problems.
Researchers found that coronavirus survivors were 40% more likely to become depressed or suffer from insomnia, and 20% more likely to have substance abuse in the year following infection. They also had an increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidal thoughts and panic attacks. According to scientists, the more severe the disease was tolerated, the more often participants in the study reported mental health problems.
Earlier, sociologists from the American University of New Hampshire found that vaccination against COVID-19 not only improves immunity, but also improves a person’s mental health.
Also, we recall that representatives of the Russian Ministry of Health plan to consider the possibility of including a psychiatrist’s consultation in the list of free services as part of in-depth medical examinations for citizens who have had coronavirus.
