President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that his personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin “will definitely unblock relations between Ukraine and Russia.” This was reported by TASS with reference to an interview with the Ukrainian leader to RBC-Ukraine.
According to Zelensky, at this meeting, the two heads of state will need to find a way out of the conflict situation. Earlier, he said that Ukraine is ready for any format of negotiations with Russia, but the Kremlin has not yet shown its readiness for dialogue. The Ukrainian leader lamented that the responses to official requests and attempts to contact Vladimir Putin for some reason do not lead to a personal meeting. The telephone conversation, he said, is also not yet confirmed in the Kremlin.
In addition, Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking about the help of Western partner countries, noted that Ukraine does not need people with foreign flags on its territory, since this could destabilize the whole world. Ukraine, according to him, does not want to give Russia an extra reason to say that it has some kind of “bases” from which the Russian Federation needs to defend itself. And he called the evacuation of diplomats and OSCE representatives from Ukraine untimely.
And finally, the leader of Ukraine announced the need to conclude a global treaty on the country’s security, which, in his opinion, would have to be signed by the “powerful ones”, that is, the United States and Russia. “We will not get off with the Normandy format team, and no one will get off,” he stressed, pointing out that three to five points can be singled out for the security of Ukraine in this global agreement.
According to Zelensky, such a document will become the equivalent of Ukraine’s entry into NATO. As for the real entry into the alliance, for this the country will need a lot of time.
As Interfax clarifies, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said earlier that he was doing everything possible to seat Zelensky and Putin at the negotiating table. According to him, Rome is considering the possibility of his trip to Moscow.
Earlier, the leader of Ukraine, in response to the official statements of the Russian Ministry of Defense on the withdrawal of Russian troops from the border of Ukraine, said that he did not yet see the implementation of these promises. The United States and NATO have also said that Russia is still building up troops near Ukraine’s borders.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, meanwhile, said key Russian units were moving towards the border, not away from it. A senior Western intelligence official told Reuters that the risk of Russian aggression against Ukraine would remain high until the end of February, and Russia could still attack Ukraine “virtually without warning.”
