Caricatures of popular and iconic characters from Portoviejo take over streets and parks

PORTOVIEJO

The capital of Manabí woke up on Wednesday the 16th with some of its corners painted with caricatures. The images are of native and popular characters, such as a weaver from Picoazá, a candy vendor who supports Liga de Portoviejo and who recently managed to fulfill his dead mother’s dream of being a teacher, or that timbalero who cheers up the mornings in the Central Park.

Also, within this campaign undertaken by the Municipality of Portoviejo, called Brandicatura —from the union of the words brand (‘brand’ in English) and cartoon—, you can see the faces and figures of more characters, such as Virginia Limongi, former Miss Ecuador and who highlights the beauty and intelligence of women from Porto Viejo; and the plastic artist and sculptor Ivo Uquillas, who although he was not born in the capital of Manabi, is one more adopted son of this city.

The images are displayed with large signs in regenerated streets, parks, emblematic works —such as the Plaza Central market— and other places, as a way to highlight the pride of the people of Portoviejo despite the vicissitudes they went through during the 2016 earthquake and currently due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Caricature is a very powerful communication resource that has been used for centuries. Before the Internet, in the newspapers, the big topics became caricatures. Our beloved citizens now are too”, explained Jorge Alfonso Macías, director of the Municipality of Portoviejo, regarding this civic campaign.

Through this campaign honors those popular characters that are part of the collective memory. This is the case of Carlos Alfredo Rivas Vera, teacher and known as Carameléate; and Raúl García Pinargote, who, despite not being able to speak, devises ways to be able to communicate with any passer-by in the streets, by means of signs and a good deal of humor, which he accompanies with binoculars.

Also, in the middle of the Picoazá parish park is the caricature of the toquilla straw hat weaver Margarita García; and also from Carlos Luis Andrade Espinoza, a well-known television presenter.

In addition, musical characters are represented, such as the well-known timbalero Washington Hernán Joza; and a posthumous tribute is made to the so-called Doctor of Salsa, Marcos Yépez.

Several people from Manabi were photographed next to these caricatures, which seek to make the people of Buenos Aires feel proud of their artists and popular characters. (I)
