Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergey Ivanov spoke about the terrible consequences of problems with early cancer detection in the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic in Russia.
According to him, before the pandemic – in 2019 – there was a constant increase in cancer cases in the country, and in 2020 the figures dropped significantly. According to the Moskva agency, the scientist, in the framework of the general meeting of professors of the Russian Academy of Sciences, called this a reflection of “those organizational difficulties that did not allow patients to undergo early diagnosis in a timely manner.”
According to Ivanov’s forecasts, over the next five years, mortality from cancer will jump in Russia. He listed the most common types of cancer in the Russian Federation. “First of all, it is breast cancer, cancer of the body of the uterus, prostate, colon and other organs. And it was these patients who first of all encountered difficulties in organizing oncological care, ”concluded the professor.
