Finland and Sweden will participate today in the summit of NATO defense ministers.
Representatives of Ukraine and Georgia will also attend the meeting, Yle reports.
The negotiations will discuss the aggravation of the security situation in Europe due to the accumulation of the Russian military near the borders of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the latest poll showed that 43% of Finnish residents would support joining NATO if the authorities consider this step “in the interests of the country.” According to Helsingin Sanomat, 27% of Finns spoke out against membership in the alliance, and about 30% have not yet decided.
At the same time, the survey participants named the main reason for joining NATO as fear due to a possible deterioration in relations with the Russian Federation. In the event of an “attack by the aggressor”, Finland would be able to receive military assistance from the allies, the respondents indicated.
Earlier, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that the country retains the right to apply for NATO membership “depending on the situation.”
