Turkey must restrict the Black Sea straits for the movement of the Russian Navy in punishment for violating the Montreux Convention. This was stated on Twitter by the former commander of US forces in Europe, Lieutenant General Ben Hodges.
In his opinion, Turkey should limit the movement of the Russian fleet through the straits. However, as the general noted, Ankara must be completely sure that the United States will not leave it unprotected from retaliatory measures from the Kremlin. According to Hodges, the international community needs a new strategy for the Black Sea region.
How exactly Russia violated the Montreux Convention, he did not explain.
In the case of warships, the Convention lays down a number of provisions governing their passage through the straits. These provisions determine the mode of entry, length of stay and tonnage, as well as the caliber of the main gun they may carry on board. The stay of warships of non-Black Sea states is limited to a maximum of 21 days, and the total tonnage of all foreign warships transiting through the straits cannot exceed 15,000 tons.
On February 10, six large landing ships of the Russian Navy entered the Black Sea.
