The exit panel of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the earlier adopted RUSADA cancellation of the temporary suspension of 15-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva from the competition and allowed her to participate in the individual tournament at the Beijing Olympics.
CAS rejected appeals from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Skating Union (ISU), RBC reports.
Thus, according to the verdict of the sports arbitration, Valieva will continue her performance in the individual competition at the Olympics.
Meanwhile, as the Telegram channel clarifies, “Before everyone else. Well, almost”, the decision to allow the figure skater Valieva to the personal tournament of the Olympics was made taking into account her status as a “protected person” (the figure skater is under 16 years old).
At the same time, CAS pointed out that the decision to allow figure skater Valieva to participate in the individual tournament took into account her later notification of a positive doping test in December.
Moreover, the arbitration drew attention to the presence of serious problems associated with the late notification of the results of the doping test of the figure skater Valieva.
Recall, earlier it became known that Valieva’s doping test, taken on December 25, 2021 (before the start of the Beijing Olympics) at the Russian Championship, which was held in St. Petersburg, gave a positive result for the banned cardio drug trimetazidine.
“The result was reported by the WADA-accredited anti-doping laboratory in Stockholm on February 8th. After that, the athlete was conditionally suspended by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA),” the International Testing Agency (ITA) said in a statement. However, Valieva protested the suspension, and on February 9, RUSADA decided to lift it.
Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee has filed an appeal against the ruling with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). “A decision on the result of the Russian skaters in the team tournament can only be made after a final decision on the merits of the case has been made,” the ITA said in a statement.
Earlier at the Olympics, the awards ceremony for Russian figure skaters was postponed. The fact that a cardiac drug was found in Valieva’s sample was reported by the media, citing sources.
