Édison Saquichahua, who was reported missing a few days ago, was found dead in the Tomebamba River on the afternoon of this Sunday, February 13.

The body, which was trapped in the middle of the brush, a trunk and stones from the river, was rescued by personnel from the Cuenca Fire Department. According to preliminary information, the young man’s body had no signs of violence.

Saquichahua’s relatives went to the site to verify that it was his relative. Up close, they observed how some 50 firefighters carried out the extraction of the corpse with the help of a ladder truck.

The rescue of the body was difficult, because it was entangled in the rubble of the river and because, in addition, an intense rain was recorded at the time of these tasks, in the sector of the Tomebamba citadel, at the height of the avenue 24 of May.

The ladder of the car entered approximately 50 meters, from the shore to the site where the body was found. This was reported by the captain of the firefighters, Julio Hinostroza.

According to the conditions of the body and because he still had his clothes on, the rescuers estimated that the young man fell approximately 800 meters upstream and would have been there for about 30 hours.

Jorge Torres, the first fire chief, reiterated that at first glance no signs of violence were observed, so it is presumed that it was an accident. However, this information will be analyzed at the Forensic Center by medical examiners.

Given the winter season, which has caused flooding in Cuenca and in several cities in the country, firefighters urged citizens not to go near the riverbanks to avoid accidents. This warning is made because people have been observed fishing or playing in these places, without considering the imminent danger. (I)
