The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine at an extraordinary meeting decided to allocate UAH 16.6 billion (about $600 million) to insurance companies to ensure the safety of aircraft flights in Ukrainian airspace.
According to the country’s infrastructure ministry, these funds “if necessary” will be used to ensure flight safety in Ukraine for insurance companies, reinsurers, leasing companies and air carriers. It is noted that the amount covers insured events for at least 23 aircraft.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal wrote on his Telegram channel that such a decision is aimed at stabilizing the situation on the country’s passenger air transportation market and guaranteeing the return of Ukrainian citizens.
The head of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Oleksandr Kubrakov, noted that the allocation of funds should be “a signal to the international community” that the Ukrainian authorities are “ready to assume financial obligations for the safety of aircraft in Ukrainian airspace.” In addition, he added that the Ukrainian sky remains open, most flights to and from Ukraine are carried out as usual.
Recall, earlier it was reported that due to the actions of Western insurance companies that suspend insurance coverage, the airspace of Ukraine will be actually closed from February 14.
