Mincetur: technical study on the application of safeguards to textile imports nearing completion

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Roberto Sánchez, held a meeting with various trade unions microentrepreneurs Textiles of Gamarra, in which the possibility of applying temporary safeguards to the import of textile garments was mentioned.

In this sense, the head of the sector indicated that, in compliance with the World Trade Organization (WTO), the technical study at Indecopi is being completed.

It is important to mention that, according to the WTO, safeguard measures are defined as “urgent” measures that are applied when the increase in imports of certain products have caused or threaten to cause serious damage to the domestic industry. .

Minister Sánchez stated that the Government of peter castle seeks to prioritize competitiveness and support for the national industry. Likewise, he stressed that it is important to boost the production of cotton farmers. “A social market economy with fair conditions for the national textile industry is necessary,” he said.

Finally, he stressed that concrete measures are needed, at the government level, to reactivate the textile sector, such as promote the FAE-Mype Confeccionista as a public fund created to guarantee working capital loans for micro and small businessesrestructure and expand the Myperú Purchases program (school uniforms, hospital clothing and military uniform).

The head of Mincetur met with the Peruvian Association of Apparel Manufacturers (APIC), National Union of Textile Entrepreneurs (Join up), Association of Exporters of the Gamarra Emporium (Asodex) and the cognamype.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the value of textile exports grew from US$1,270 million in 2017 to more than US$1,300 million in 2019.
