Aleksey Venediktov, editor-in-chief of Ekho Moskvy radio station, could not find evidence that NATO promised Russia not to expand. He made the corresponding statement in an interview with the YouTube channel “To be continued.”
“When the president says that the NATO members gave us their word not to expand, I checked it. And I did not find where the NATO members took such an obligation. Have not found. And I’m talking about this,” said Venediktov.
It is worth noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated publicly that the alliance allegedly promised Moscow not to include new countries in the eastern direction. Such a statement, for example, was made in December 2021 at a large annual press conference: “Not one inch to the east, we were told in the 1990s. So what? They cheated. They just cheated.”
Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, in an interview with the German channel ZDF in 2014, called such rumors a “myth”. “This is a myth, indeed, the press had a hand in its creation,” the politician said. Later, the information was denied by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. According to him, the founding document of the bloc contains the words that any European country has the right to become its member. “NATO has never made promises not to expand,” he said.
