Air traffic over Ukraine may be suspended from February 14. Oleksiy Goncharenko, deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from Petro Poroshenko’s European Solidarity faction, announced this on his Telegram channel.
“Most likely, from tomorrow, from 16:00 (17:00 Moscow time) in Kiev, air traffic in Ukraine will be suspended,” he said.
The MP clarified that one of the largest British insurance companies sent notices that from February 14, from 14:00 London time (17:00 Moscow time), insurance of civil aircraft that are in the airspace of Ukraine is terminated. Owners of leased aircraft already prohibit their aircraft from flying into Ukrainian airspace.
Earlier, Strana.ua, citing sources, reported that the airspace of Ukraine would be effectively closed from February 14 due to the actions of Western insurance companies. The interlocutor of the publication noted that the largest British insurers, who reinsure other international companies, sent an official message to all world aircraft owners that insurance coverage for all aircraft in Ukraine would cease to operate in 48 hours.
On February 12, it also became known that the Dutch airline KLM suspended flights to Ukraine. Earlier, a number of countries announced recommendations to leave Ukraine due to fears of an escalation of the situation. The US State Department urged non-essential staff of the embassy in Kiev to leave Ukraine.
