On Republic Square in the Kazakh city of Alma-Ata, a rally in memory of the victims of the January events was organized, not approved by the authorities.
Dozens of people gathered at the Independence Monument and demanded to stop the torture of detainees. In the vicinity of the square, there is a cluster of police cars, special equipment, presumably with communication jammers.
Those gathered shout out: “Nazarbayev sottalsyn” (“Judge Nazarbayev”). They also demand the impeachment of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, early presidential elections, and that Tokayev not run for a second term.
In addition, the participants called for the release of detained minors, to bring to justice the police officers responsible for torture, and to release those suspected of minor offenses.
The posters bear the inscription “Tokayev, go away. The whole country hates you,” as well as calls to impose personal sanctions against ex-president and Interior Minister Yerlan Turgumbaev, whose department is blamed for torture.
According to official figures, at least 227 people died in the January events. Authorities have not released the names of the dead, despite calls from human rights activists to release the names of those killed and to provide information about the circumstances of death.
