Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Joe Biden ended an hour-long telephone conversation on the escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
According to the press service of the White House, the US president made it clear that Russia “will receive a decisive response and face serious costs” from Washington and its partners in the event of an escalation of the situation around Ukraine. Biden stressed that “a Russian invasion of Ukraine would lead to massive human suffering and weaken Russia’s position.”
“President Biden has made clear to President Putin that while the United States remains prepared to engage in diplomacy in full coordination with our allies and partners, we are equally prepared for other scenarios,” the White House said in a statement.
According to a senior US administration official, the teams of both leaders will keep in touch over the situation around Ukraine in the coming days.
The topic of a hypothetical Russian invasion of Ukraine, which should take place in the winter of 2021-2022, has been on the pages of the world media for the fourth month already. As evidence, satellite images of Russian military equipment in the regions bordering Ukraine are cited. The date of the alleged Russian invasion has been updated several times, and, as Joe Biden said the day before, it should take place on February 16th.
